Visibility and Control of External Exposures

The College Network Selects CloudLock to Gain Visibility and Control of External Exposures Effectively with Automated Monitoring and Alerting

The College Network™ is a global educational services and eLearning provider that enables busy adults to enjoy the pride, prestige, and enhanced earning power that comes from obtaining a college degree or professional certificate from their established partner universities.

Since 1992 The College Network and its partner universities have provided accessible educational programs for individuals seeking degrees or professional certificates, entirely through distance learning. Programs are available from leading universities for associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s degrees and professional certificates. Areas of study include a variety of disciplines such as healthcare, nursing, business, criminal justice, fire science, human resources, project management, marketing, lean six sigma, legal studies and more.

The Problem

The College Network migrated to Google Apps early in 2011 as part of their innovative overall cloud strategy. The cloud strategy was developed by the office of the CIO to gain cost savings and reap the collaboration benefits of using cloud platforms and SaaS applications.

With the adoption of the cloud technologies came the need to maintain the same level of visibility and control that they had with on-premise systems.

“When we made the decision to migrate to Google Apps, my biggest concern was having visibility into what users were doing regarding access to sensitive files,” said Ryan Sallee, Chief Information Officer, The College Network.

Monitoring and Alerting on External Exposures

The Village of Westmont, Illinois, Selects CloudLock for Continous Monitoring of External Exposure and Sharing Violations

The Village of Westmont is an incorporated municipality under the laws of the State of Illinois. The governing and policy-making body of the Village consists of a Village Mayor and six Trustees elected on an at-large basis for overlapping terms. The Village of Westmont is a community located approximately 22 miles west of the Chicago Loop in the southeastern portion of DuPage County, on the fringe of the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

The Problem

The municipality migrated to Google Apps and has been using Google Apps for Government since it became available in 2010. The move to Google Apps was primarily about enabling staff flexibility and accessibility to data from anywhere; goals that could not be achieved with on-premise legacy systems.

With the move to Google Apps and the adoption of Google Docs, the users became in charge of setting permissions and sharing on documents that they created.

“Google Apps for Government provided us with unprecedented flexibility to access our data from anywhere and collaborate effectively. However, with users having control to create and share documents both internally and externally, we needed to find a solution that would secure our sensitive data from being exposed,” said Glen Liljeberg, IT Manager, The Village of Westmont, Illinois.
